It's really a very good textbook and it's different from previous textbooks.
The most important is that it is Competency based. It has included various competencies like Principles of retroactive surgeries, demonstration of Bell's phenomenon, anatomical basis of Horner's syndrome. In addition coverage of various topics like various phaco techniques, ARMD in detail, ocular therapeutics in detail
It is definitely a textbook which I will recommend to my MBBS and Post Graduate students

I read this book and am really impressed by the way it has been compiled. The information is simplified, very well organized into different systems and topics, the topics being divided point wise which makes it easy and interesting to read. Moreover it could definitely be used as one's primary book for ophthalmology. The pages are of excellent quality, which compels the reader to read more and more from it. Diagrams and pictures attract the readers. I personally found the font type and size to be suitable to read. There's not cutting of content as such. It's a complete textbook, great for acquiring information as well preparing for university exams. I highly recommend this book.

The first thought that came to mind as I held this book was that I wish I had such a book during my undergraduate and postgraduate days.
Even for a practicing consultant, this book will serve as a ready refresher. This book is poised to become a boon to teachers in Medical Colleges all over India, who are either juggling with incorporating the new CBME curriculum in their set-ups and even those actively involved with Medical Education Technology – because this book has a built-in CBME style competency checklist-cum- indexing besides having chapter-wise references to the competencies. There is a special CBME mapping which is not just creative but also extremely useful.
The schematic diagrams are a special feature of this book. Colors have been used very effectively in imparting the understanding of schemes and progression. The diagrams are visually appealing and easy to understand. Even the examples used are very relevant and interesting.
One can see the tremendous amount of effort that has been put into bringing out this painstakingly crafted masterpiece in the form of a highly organized textbook of Ophthalmology.
Reading it feels like imbibing the understanding and knowledge distilled after reading five books without actually having to hold or buy five books. The anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and Optics chapters are exceptional. They provide great conceptual and higher order learning. The chapter on Optics even helps with the effortless recapitulation of Physics’ principles.
It is not just an invaluable textbook but also a very useful book to have at hand in the clinic. I am definitely going to keep copies of this book in my Departmental Library not just for easy reference but also for students to make an informed decision about obtaining their individual copies. I would not hesitate in recommending it highly among my undergraduate students as a textbook, as well as to my postgraduate students, as a ready reckoner and revision guide.
This book fills in a void in the current CBME era of Medical education and needs to be welcomed into the Ophthalmic community with open arms.

This book is an underrated gem. And definitely better than Khurana.
Pros: it's very easy to read and understand and replicate as answers along with diagrams in exams. As always there are ample charts, tables, and diagrams given. It is CBME compliant and all competency tables have been covered.
Cons: I felt that the last few chapters of Khurana which were practically oriented like instruments and darkroom procedures etc...helped a lot for vivas, while in this book it is slightly inadequate.
This is the book to purchase. Especially for clarifying your bases and writing answers.
I know a friend who used this book only and got an Ophthalmology distinction last year. Its a short subject and this book serves its purpose well.

The Textbook of Opthalmology by Sanjeev Kumar Mittal is a great book for going through the basics of the subject and also for learning some extra edge information.
I have used this book for my semester exams and I could also do MCQs by reading the chapters of this book thoroughly. The diagrams are also very helpful since Opthalmology is a clinical subject and we must practice image-based questions. Some of the points that have made this book a great resource for me are its elaborately labelled diagrams, the amazing tables that have made the information concise and easy to remember, and the overall lucid language of the book.
Thus, I would say this book is a great tool for those 3rd year MBBS students who wish to do well in their Professional exams, and also have a robust preparation for NEET-PG/NExT.

From the very start of third year I have been struggling a lot to find a good book for opthalmology.
I tried Khurana but it was nearly impossible because of the way of presentation.
I tried parsons , it's a good book , but I can't write answers from it.
So Few days back I started reading Thieme's Textbook of Opthalmology.
I started with lens , so the anatomy was given very nicely in a very simplified manner . All the important points had been covered , like physiology, lens changes , abnormal position , etc.
It has really good images , which I must say , especially clinical images.
Apart from it , it is given in pointer format which makes it easier to remember for exams , plus it has a lot of flowcharts and tables too.
I wished they gave clinical case based scenarios and mcqs as well.
So yes currently I'm liking this book as far as I have read. Let's see if this book becomes my favourite one!

Mittal sir and Agarwal sir has probably created the best and all in one, complete in itself, book of ophthalmology. It has almost everything required to understand ophthalmology. I even completed my ophthalmology syllabus just one night before the exam, going through all its diagrams, headings, flowcharts and blue boxes especially. It is the go-to book for ophthalmology,
Only thing struck me was that surgeries were not given chapter wise, but a completely different chapter of eye surgeries was given, which may be useful in long term though. Overall, 10 out of 10. I am completely satisfied with this book!
