Clinical informatics tools and the core implementation strategies for these tools have great potential to improve the quality and safety of healthcare. The lessons learned by operational leaders in clinical informatics should be disseminated broadly. ACI Open, the Open Access companion journal to Applied Clinical Informatics, seeks articles describing applications of a broad range of health information technology tools including clinical information systems (including electronic medical records and systems, personal health records, physician/provider order entry, electronic prescribing, clinical decision support, nursing information systems, patient scheduling and tracking tools, lab information systems, radiology information systems, PACS, GP information systems), mobile health applications, administrative and management systems, eHealth systems, information technology development, deployment, usability, and evaluation, socio-technical aspects of information technology and health IT training.

ACI Open invites “Informatics Briefs.” Informatics Briefs are intended to capture projects with an emphasis on descriptive evaluation and "lessons learned." They are a Clinical Informatics equivalent to case reports in clinical medicine. However, the focus of Informatics Briefs should be a clinical information system with a detailed analysis of the system’s failures or successes. This format is recommended for operational clinical informatics professionals who are interested in disseminating their work without performing a formal research evaluation of the project. ACI Open also encourages clinical informatics professionals in-training, including those in formal clinical informatics fellowships, to submit Informatics Briefs.

ACI Open seeks to publish informatics articles in areas that are lacking from the informatics journal landscape. One such topic is governance within healthcare institutions, including data governance and the process by which new tools are added to clinical information systems. Another area of interest is public health informatics, with particular attention to work that is typically solely presented at public health conferences. For example, reports of innovations in the public health informatics space as well as summaries of best practices would be appropriate. Another topic of interest is ethical issues in clinical informatics including fairness of prediction models, safety issues related to artificial intelligence and machine learning (including large language models), data sovereignty, and the need to diversify the clinical informatics workforce.
